"True mastery is found in the details. The way you handle the little things defines the way you handle everything."
Hello and welcome to the Gentleman's Journey podcast. My name is Anthony, your host, and today we're going to talk about something right, that, realistically, you have to go through this in order to really become the person you want to be. And there is no shortcut to this and there is no way around this. But once you fully embrace this, the journey not only does it take on a different meaning, but you really can understand and really refine your path. Now, what is this that I'm talking about today? I'm really talking about embracing failure as a part of growth. So let's go ahead and let's talk about it. You know, here's the thing, and we talk about this a lot on the podcast Everyone fears failure, right, but what if I told you that it's actually one of the most important steps to success? It really is. A lot of people think that failure is the opposite of growth, right, but it's not. It's actually part of the process. Failure helps you grow, right, because think of it like this.
Speaker 1:You know you talk about Michael Jordan, greatest of all time gets thrown around a lot, right? Did you know that he was actually cut from his high school basketball team? One of the greatest basketball players of all time was cut from his high school basketball team was cut from his high school basketball team. Oprah Winfrey, multi-billionaire, owns you know did a really big show for years, decades, decades, right has her own network. They told her flat out that she wasn't fit to be on television. In actuality, if you actually look at her beginning kind of career, she had more similarity to Jerry Springer than anything else. True story, right?
Speaker 1:And Steve Jobs think about this. He created Apple, right. He was fired from Apple. Yes, fired from Apple. Yes, the guy who created the iPhone, the iPad, apple itself, was fired from Apple, a company he created, right.
Speaker 1:But here's the thing what all these people have in common, and what you will have in common with them, is that they take failure head on, they learn from it and they use it as fuel to rise even higher. Because here's the truth, and I need you to understand this, as I say this to you Failure doesn't mean you're not enough. It means you're trying, it means you're learning and it means you're growing. The question isn't whether you're going to fail, because you will, I promise. The real question is what will you do when it happens? What will you do when it happens?
Speaker 1:So, in today's episode, what we're going to do. We're going to explore how to embrace failure as a part of growth. We're going to go through some real, powerful steps on how to reframe your mindset, learn from your setbacks, and you're going to turn every failure into a stepping stone for success. Why? Because what is 2025? Whose year is it? That's right. It's your year. This is your year. This is going to be the year that you are going to embrace your failures and you're going to be the best person you can be. So in order for us to do that, we got to embrace these failures head on and get you going.
Speaker 1:Okay, because here's the thing you want to know where most people get stuck at when they fail. Instead of learning from it, they dwell on it. They replay the mistake over and over and over and over in their minds, and when they do that, you know what starts to happen Self-doubt and regret, anxiety. The voice says you're not good enough. You're never going to break the cycle. You're never going to get out of here. You're never going to break the cycle. You're never going to get out of here. You're never going to get that job. You're never going to be a millionaire. You're never going to lose that weight that starts to creep in. But here's the thing Failure is only wasted if you do not take the time to reflect on it.
Speaker 1:So how do we reflect on failure? The first thing, you have to ask yourself the right questions. We're really good at asking ourselves the wrong questions, right, but ask these questions. The first question is what went wrong as I take a drink here? What went wrong? Next question ask yourself what could you have done differently. Another question you can ask yourself what part of this is within my control? When you start asking these questions, you know what you're starting to do. You start to take a. Instead of being subjective, you start to be objective. Right, that's a real mindset shift that you have to do.
Speaker 1:When you're embracing failure, you can't be all in your feelings. You got to be subjective about it. What went wrong? What could you have done differently, and what part of it was it was not in your control. Because there's a lot of times when things are not in your control that you try to just take like oh, this is my, you know, I'm taking accountability for it. Why, if it's not in your control, don't? Because here's the thing, like I talked about earlier, you have to focus on facts and not your feelings. I know that's hard to hear, because feelings of disappointment or embarrassment they're natural, but you know what, just like with everything, they don't tell the full story.
Speaker 1:Break down your failure objectively. What specific action or decision led to that result? If you would have woke up 15, 20 minutes early, would you have made it to your appointment on time or your interview on time? Right? If you wouldn't have watched Breaking Bad, you know if you wouldn't have done a full series you know full 8, 10, 12 episodes and you would have got the right sleep, maybe you would have did better on your test, right? You have to remember there's so many things that are in your control and there's some things that are not in your control. We are only accountable to the things that are in our control. Okay, now, as we're talking about that, this is something that I do and I think it would help you out as well Write down your failure.
Speaker 1:A lot of times, when we are thinking about our failures, we're making it worse in our mind than it really is. And, just like with anything, once you write it down, now it's not in your mind, it's on a piece of paper. Now you can physically look at it and as you look at it you can say like, okay, so I did that. Now, and next to that, or underneath it, I write mine. Underneath, I write down on my failure. What happened, what was the failure, what did I learn and what action can I take to improve so this doesn't happen again? You know how I say on this podcast that everything happens for you and not to you. That's how you start to frame it by doing that action right. Because, like I keep telling you guys, there is no such thing as failure. There's only lessons in this. There's only lessons.
Speaker 1:You have to remember that the journey to self-improvement, the journey to become a gentleman, the journey to be in your best and self-mastery, there's going to be failures. You're not going to be perfect, so stop. All you have to do is be consistent. When you're starting your failure journal, right, and you keep breaking these things down, you know what starts to happen. You start to recognize patterns. You start to understand that there's a recurring theme in everything right, and as you're identifying these root causes, you start to see what they have in common and actually what you can do to prevent them.
Speaker 1:If you're someone who's chronically late. Set your clock 15, 20 minutes ahead so that we're always going to be on time, right? If you truly want something, you'll make it work. It'll happen. You'll fail, but then you will succeed. You have to remember, on this journey, nobody's perfect, including me, nobody. We're all on this path to be the best we can be, but the only way that that can happen is we have to learn from our failures. Right, because you know what it does. To be honest with you, it creates grit. Sometimes your dreams are so big and you want to do such big things the world then breaks you down to, so that way you could build yourself up from nothing to be the best you can be. That's what failure is all about.
Speaker 1:You took a chance. You went and swung. You got up to the plane, you swung and you swung at the ball right. You went up and asked that girl for her number or hi, right. You went up to your question, said hello to them. You know you went out for that job opportunity. You took a chance.
Speaker 1:People that take chances are the ones that are going to win, because they'll fail, but they'll learn from it. Anybody anybody who is successful at anything failed first, and the people that were successful in the beginning, then they fell on hard times, they quit. When you start to embrace failure, when you start to understand how powerful failure is and how it's going to make you better, you start to understand that the only thing, the only person that is stopping you from you. That's what's happening, because think of it like this Thomas Edison, right, when he invented the light bulb, they say I don't know. It took him like 10,000 tries. Right, and what they asked him was when he finally invented it. They said like hey, how long did it take you to figure this out? And they said like I don't know. 10,000 tries, like wait a minute, 10,000 tries. And he's like yeah, I failed 10,000 ways that didn't work so I could figure out the way it does. Let me tell you another story about this, because this is something that always motivates me.
Speaker 1:We all know who Elon Musk is right. So what you may not know about Elon Musk is that he actually created PayPal, right, and he sold PayPal for billions of dollars. His share of the money of the sale was like three or $400 million, right. Money of the cell was like three or four hundred million dollars, right. What he did is he created solar city, he bought tesla and then he created space x.
Speaker 1:Right now, this we're going to talk about something that's crazy, that a lot of people don't know about him, as he's creating SpaceX. You know what SpaceX does? It's obviously for space exploration, but they create rockets that go up and come back down, right. Usually, when you're launching a rocket, it comes back down in pieces and they're not reusable. He was the first one to create reusable rockets. Well, as he was doing this, right, each time that he would shoot a rocket up, it'd be 30 to 50 million dollars. That's a lot of money, right. So he did it twice, spent $100 million. Nothing worked.
Speaker 1:But he learned from his mistakes, right? And on the final one, he had the US military with him, and if this rocket launch didn't work, not only was he going to lose Space Axis, but he's pretty much going to lose out the rest of his companies because he's going to be bankrupt space. Actually, he's pretty much going to lose out the rest of his companies because he's going to be bankrupt on top of that. On top of that, he was in the middle of almost getting. He was in the middle of getting divorced, right? So you're talking about somebody who was failing at everything currently in his life.
Speaker 1:If you would have looked at his life right then and there you're failing. This isn't working. Solar cities, cities. You're taking money from this to do that. Tesla hasn't been. It's not Tesla yet right. Everywhere you would have seen it. We're like dude, you're a failure. You really invested all this money for nothing. But again, it just takes one chance, one opportunity that you take from learning from your failures to turn your life around. You know what happened? That rocket launched, didn't explode, was up in there for 15 minutes and it came right back down right where it was supposed to. Then he got a contract, I think for $3 or $4 billion, and that money was used to build SpaceX more, to invest in a Tesla they bought a plant and to build SolarCity out.
Speaker 1:He was willing to put it all on the line because he wasn't afraid of failure, because he knew that failure is the way to success. That's the biggest thing you have to understand. Failure is the way to success. That's the biggest thing you have to understand. Failure is the way to success. Sorry, to get a drink there, it just is. When you're not afraid to fail, all you see is success. Remember that, because here's the thing I need you to understand.
Speaker 1:When you're facing a failure, the next time, don't run from it. Reflect on it, write it down, find the lesson, use that as fuel to prepare yourself or propel yourself forward, because this is the thing you have to understand about failure. It's not final. It's a powerful teacher. It's a sign that you're trying, that you're growing and you're pushing towards something that matters. Every success story has chapters of failure. Yours will be no different, but you know what the question is what will you learn and how will you turn today's setbacks into tomorrow's breakthroughs? How will you do it? Ask yourself that. So what I want you to do tonight, I want you to write down a failure of yours. Right, write it down. What did you learn from it, what could you have done differently, and how can you use this to propel you forward? And how can you use this to propel you forward? Because this year is your year. 2025 is the year of you. Remember that.
