"True mastery is found in the details. The way you handle the little things defines the way you handle everything."
Hello and welcome to the Gentleman's Journey podcast. My name is Anthony, your host, and today we're going to talk about something that little kids ask you all the time, and I'm going to say between the ages of one and probably six and it's something that a lot of adults don't have an answer to. And when you don't know the answer to this, it really puts a huge impedance, impediment, roadblock, whatever you want to say, into building the life you want to live Now, what is this that I'm talking about? To building the life you want to live Now, what is this that I'm talking about? I'm talking about what is your why? So let's go ahead and let's talk about this, right? So you know, as we're talking about this, you know I always preface it like this like have you ever wondered why? Why some people? They just seem unstoppable, like it doesn't matter what setbacks they have, they just keep pushing forward. It's not luck, what it is, it's because they know exactly why they're doing what they're doing. See, here's the thing, and I'm going to be honest with you.
Speaker 1:When I first started hearing about this why stuff right, and I think it's Simon Sinek says start with why I thought it was very fluffy. I'm like, oh, that's just that makes me feel good. It's a little fluffy subject. I'm like, oh, that's just that makes me feel scared. This is a little fluffy subject, but it's not a fluffy subject or concept. I should say it honestly. It's the foundation that keeps you grounded when things get hard, it's the gas in your tank to push through when you don't have anything left, and it's what you see in front of you after the obstacles, or why the obstacles are happening to you right or for you right and realistically. It separates the people from being average and being a great success, right? Because what we're going to do today, in this episode, we're going to dive deep into how to define your why. It's that core driver that really fuels every goal, every action, every thought, every intention and every success you have in your life. It really is defined by your why and honestly, by the end of this episode, I'm going to do my best to give you real, practical steps to uncover your deeper purpose and align your actions with it and then, honestly, send you off and let you be in the stratosphere and create the life you want. Okay, now, here's the thing. Now, here's the thing. This is why your why matters. That's a real tongue-tier, because here's the thing I'm going to be honest with you Most people that I see that don't really reach any amount of success in their life, or I'm not going to say failures, but haven't learned the lessons in life in order to be successful. They lack purpose. And here's what happens when you lack purpose you burn out and you drift aimlessly. This is the truth.
Speaker 1:I'll give you an example. So I have a client who's lost, I think, 110, 115 pounds, and the reason why he did it is his daughter came to him when she was little and was afraid that he wasn't going to make it to her graduation when she was in high school. And he's like you know what I want to stay healthy, not just for me, I got to do this for my kids. I want to be at my daughter's graduation. And I'll tell you what all this guy did was cut carbs out of his life, started eating more protein and just started walking. That's it, just started walking, and literally over I think it was like two years. So, give or take a couple months, he lost like 115 pounds. Now he's in the best shape of his life and he's in his you know what? He's? 46, 47. So he tied his why not only him losing weight, but he had a circumstance happen to him that shook him.
Speaker 1:Like. You got to do this. Your why has to matter, right, because here's the thing when something like that happens to you, when life hits you right in between the eyes, it's doing that because you don't have a vision or purpose. So life challenges you to create one, so that way it can start working for you and not against you. Okay, because that's what's happening to your life right now. If your life is working against you in a lot of ways, it's because you don't have a why. You start to create a why everything changes, I'm telling you. You start to create a why everything changes. I'm telling you Because here's the thing, and this is why I say this A strong why turns obstacles into challenges, not roadblocks. Because here's the thing and this is a quote right he who has a why to live can bear almost anything.
Speaker 1:Anyhow you look at anybody who wants to be successful or wanted to be successful and and not only got successful, but maintain success they had a massive why, massive why. They were driven like nothing else you go to get anybody like look at Oprah Winfrey, look at Jordan. Look at Kobe Bryant you know Tiger Woods. Maybe that's not a great example. Look at Kobe Bryant you know Tiger Woods. Maybe that's not a great example. Any rapper, anybody, that has not only got success but has maintained success, is because they have a why behind it and they're not going to let anything or anyone stop them. They just don't and they're never going to Because, again, their why is the most important thing in the world to them. Now, since I know I've harped on this for a couple minutes, let's start discovering and defining your why.
Speaker 1:Okay, so here's one thing that when I started discovering my why was hold on, let me get a drink here I was very frustrated with my life, right, and a lot of this was bore out of the fact of I've read a lot of knowledge, right, and I would talk to my friends and I would apply this knowledge to myself and I started seeing myself become successful, but none of my friends were successful and I'd try to teach them and they just didn't do it. And then, you know, I'd go to seminars and I'd be on Instagram and I'd be on YouTube, and then, in order to learn the stuff that I wanted to know, they wanted to charge tens of thousands of dollars and I'm like you know what? Hold on a second. I know probably as much as these gurus do, but I'm not going to charge people an arm and a leg. I'm actually going to give it to them for free, because my whole thing is the more that I could give back and, with these podcasts and talking in front of groups of people and having clients, the more I give back, the more I get back in return.
Speaker 1:You know, and my why was I want to be the man that my son can look up to. My son wasn't going to look up to somebody who didn't have a vision for themselves, didn't have a focus for themselves and didn't know what they wanted to do in their life. You know, when I talk about Jen's journey and didn't know what they wanted to do in their life, when I talk about Jen's journey, it's the you're on a to become a gentleman. It takes a journey. That's the truth. I'm on a journey to become a gentleman and once I'll never see the end of this journey right. That's the greatest part. That's my why, and I get to help people in their life discover their why and discover what it is they want to do. That's what drives me, that's my passion, you know, because you know talking about that. You know, or it's usually born from either something that excites us, like what I was talking about, or what we've overcome.
Speaker 1:Some of the best motivational speakers in the world are people who have overcome odds that were insurmountable. Right, and you know, they're just everyday people. They just made a decision. So when you're discovering your why, one of the things I always tell people is what do you love doing and what struggles have shaped you? Just write that out. You will be amazed how much you know once you really start to think about that and you go back to it as I'm saying this, that first step, that could be a couple day thing and that's okay, right. So I just want to put that out there. So write down what you love doing, for you know living right. What do you love doing, I should say, and what struggles have shaped you? Because here's the thing, like here's like a journaling problem that changed my life, honestly, is it was. If I had unlimited money and time, what would I dedicate my life to? Jen's journey was born when I said that.
Speaker 1:So the second thing in this is you have to identify the people you want to impact, the people you want to impact, because a majority of the time, our why isn't about us, it's about who we serve. Right, and as you're saying that it could be family, friends, community. It's going to be one of those three things family, friends, community. Or if you get all three, that's even better, right? Because here's the question you have to ask yourself who benefits when you show up at your best? Who does? And I'll give you an example when I say that statement Teachers, parents, leaders their whys usually center off of those around them right Now.
Speaker 1:Since we're talking about that, clarify the vision of your future self. This is step three. Visualize your ideal life in the next five to 10 years. What does that success look like? Your why should pull you towards the future, not just to react to your past. You have to understand and this is something that I've had to learn the hard way is that if you're constantly reacting to your past, it means you're looking behind you, right, and if you're looking behind you, you can't see your future. What's in the past is what's in the past. Your why is what's going to pull you forward and put your head on straight and looking forward, because that's all you can do in this life, right, and the thing about it is when you start to understand that that comment I just made, that comment I just made, it's going to be easier to describe that vision or version of you that already lives with purpose. It'll be so much easier to do that, right.
Speaker 1:And the next thing is you have to create a why statement. The next thing is you have to create a why statement. So the formula is this I want to blank, and it could be contribute or including gentlemen to become the best versions of themselves and, by doing that, creating the financial freedom for myself. That way I can spend my time inspiring others, helping take control of their lives. That's mine, right, because if you look at like a business, right, they all have like a mission statement. So this is like your mission statement. Your mission statement is your why statement.
Speaker 1:And if you have a why statement, what's great about that is is that every decision you ever make guess what happens? You put it in front of that why statement. And if it doesn't align with that why statement, whatever decision that you're making, it makes your decisions easier Because, like, okay, what aligns with my why statement? This decision here. Okay, perfect, because now what starts to happen, or what this is really teaching you, is that you start to live your life in alignment with what it is that you want and want to become and who you want to be. You start to live your life in alignment when you start to create your why statement and living by that why statement. Okay, now, this is something huge is anchor your why with daily reminders.
Speaker 1:I do this on my phone, right, Like I get it three or four times a day. Just it pops up, just a reminder am I, am I doing something right now that is a hot, that that is something of high value? Right? Am I doing something that's going to be pushing me forward? Right, and sometimes I'll be getting that right in the middle of me going through instagram or just doom scrolling right, or me just lollygagging around. I'm like, oh, you know what, I'm a boop. I get right back on. You know what I mean. And then you'll get to a point to where you don't need those daily reminders because you're living your why at that point.
Speaker 1:Ok, because here's the thing Writing down your why and placing it where you'll see it every day. Remember, let's talk about, like my affirmations, placing it where you'll see it every day. Remember, I was talking about, like my affirmations, so like I have that on my mirror and my bathroom, my why statement and all my affirmations. So when I'm brushing my teeth, bam, that's what I'm looking at. Right, when I'm doing my hair, bam, that's what I'm looking at. When I'm comb, that, right, there is four to five times I'm looking at that on top of it being, you know, being reminders on my phone. That's huge. That On top of it being reminders on my phone, that's huge. Probably, on average, I'm seeing it. I would probably say probably 12 to 15 times a day.
Speaker 1:But then my why statement becomes easy. You know what I mean, because here's the thing I'm also journaling about my why statement every day. But here's the thing, as I'm saying that your why statement just shouldn't be in a journal, it just shouldn't be an affirmation, it just shouldn't be something you write down, it should be something that is alive in your daily decisions. Nothing matters if you write it down. What matters is the action you take from that. Remember that you create a why statement, start living by it. Right then and there, okay. And like I said, I create visual cues. My affirmations. I put it on my alarms, I put it on my you know wallpaper, my phone. It's all right there. And this is all very easy to do.
Speaker 1:Because here's the thing you know a lot of us when we're trying to find our why, if you're trying to find your why right now, you're overcoming an obstacle to find it. Let's just be honest, right? You're going to feel unclear, that's okay. Sometimes you just start small. Sometimes you look at your life like, okay, what is it I don't like and what is it that I do like? That could be the start of your why. Because you start to take action towards things you like and you start taking inaction and you start to actually, to be honest, you start taking action towards both things. Right, cutting off the things you don't like in your life and being more proactive in things that you do. Right, because purpose unfolds as you take action. A lot of people don't get that. A lot of people think like purpose is just in your heart and you just go for it. It doesn't work that way. Purpose unfolds as you take action. Your purpose is like a muscle the more you work it, the stronger it gets and the more it'll push you through, I promise right.
Speaker 1:And here's the other thing, too, that a lot of people have a problem with, and I don't understand. I mean I get why, too, that a lot of people have a problem with and I don't understand. I mean I get why, but you, who cares? Fear of judgment? Your why doesn't need to make sense to anybody, but you I'll say that again your why doesn't need to make sense to anybody, but you. You are the one that matters, because it's your why, it's not her, why, it's not his, why, it's not their, why, it's your, why, yours. Okay, and here's the thing A lot of times, like, we try to create a why, and it's like a paragraph long.
Speaker 1:Don't do that why and it's like a paragraph long. Don't do that. Simplify. Make it one thing. Focus on one core thing that resonates with you deeply, and I promise you everything else will be easier. Okay, please, please, please. Don't make your why like a book. Don't do that. Make it as simple and concise as possible. Simple and concise is what wins the race, okay. Now here's a big thing about your why that will happen. Is that your why will start to create a massive ripple effect in your life? Because here's the thing. Your why anchors your habits, it anchors your decisions and it anchors your relationships. Your why does all those things? And, more honestly, your why does all those things? And more honestly, because here's the thing Purpose-driven people inspire others. When you find your why, you naturally become a leader. I'll say that again when you find your why, you naturally become a leader.
Speaker 1:If your relationship is kind of in the gutter, ask yourself are you living with purpose? Are you living in the relationship with purpose? If you're not, that's a problem. If they're not, that's also a problem. Talk about it. Define your purpose together, define your purpose separately. And I'm telling you do that, and when you both have your purposes and you're both working together towards your purposes, the world changes immediately, immediately. Right, because I'll just say for me, this is my purpose, this is my why.
Speaker 1:Talking to you, doing podcasting, it's my why. I love this, I love talking to you. I love getting messages and DMs and text messages. Now, I love doing all that because this is my purpose, this is my why and I love doing it and I love helping people to find their why and watching them become successful. That's the greatest gift of all that I get almost on a daily basis. Is that daily basis? Is that? Now, here's your homework. Okay, I want you to take 10 minutes today, and what I want you to do, I want you to reflect, I want you to write it down, I want you to talk it out, even as with yourself. Whatever it takes to thing, I'm going to tell you your why is the compass, and now is the time to start walking in the direction of where your compass is leading you. Okay, so, again, I want to thank you so, so, so, so, very much for listening today. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it. It just it means the world to me.
