Hello and welcome to the Gentleman's Journey podcast. My name is Anthony, your host, and today we're going to talk about something that really is one of the key factors to really unlocking your greatest potential in your life. It's something that, once you do, it's really one of the highest forms of love you can give yourself. Now, what is this that I'm talking about today? I'm talking about the power of discipline and really how this is going to unlock you into your greatest potential. Now, as we're talking about discipline, you know a lot of people look at discipline as a punishment. Like, oh my gosh, here we go with discipline again. You know it takes 21 days to build a habit. 21 days to build a habit. All these negative connections we'll say come when we talk about discipline, or people think of regimentation, or they think of military and those kind of things. But realistically, discipline it's not a punishment. It's really the highest form of self-love that you can give yourself. You know I can just say this Like doing this podcast and, you know, going on the journey to become a gentleman, discipline is really what it's based off of.
Speaker 1:You know what I mean. When you're not disciplined, you're not consistent, because when you're disciplined, your words and your actions meet right. Discipline is what it takes in order for those two things to meet right. And when you're not disciplined, you're usually all over the place. You don't know what you're doing, you don't know what's going on, you have no idea what tomorrow's going to bring. You're literally all over the place and what you find out is when you start to be disciplined, really your whole life changes. Because what discipline really does? It gives you a focus to start pushing harder, to start doing more, to start being the person you were really meant to be. Because when you really define discipline, discipline it's not about restriction. Really, what discipline is? It's really about freedom through mastery, right? Because if you look at anybody, anybody that's done really anything with their life, they develop some kind of discipline. They just do Because, realistically, success comes from discipline. And the thing about it is when we're from discipline, you know, and the thing about it is when we're doing discipline. It's hard, it is. It's hard. You don't want to do it, but once you start being disciplined and once you start doing it and you see what your life was before and you start seeing what your life is after discipline, you never want to go back. Because let me ask you this question.
Speaker 1:Starting the year here, right? Everyone says, oh, I want to be disciplined, I want to lose that 15 pounds, or I'm going to make a hundred grand in one month, and they're gung-ho for like a week, maybe two weeks tops. There's actually a day it's January, it's either 14th or 15th, right, and it's actually called National Quitters Day because that is usually the day where over 70 to 80% of people quit on whatever their New Year's resolution was. Isn't that crazy? It's because they're not disciplined. Because they're not disciplined, you know it's gosh who said it. I think it's.
Speaker 1:Jim Rohn says this. Right, this is a quote, and I could be saying this wrong, so if I do, I apologize, but I'm just doing this off the top of my head, so I think it was Jim Rohn. He said something like yeah, that's what it is. We must all suffer one of two things. That's what it is. We all must suffer one of two things the pain of discipline or the pain of regret.
Speaker 1:Now let that sink in for a minute. How many times have you looked at other people with their success, what they're doing, and you're like man, I really wish I could do that right? Or you guys maybe started at the same job at the same time, but because they were disciplined and they went out and did it, maybe they're now in a higher position than you are, or maybe they're doing something that you want to do. The thing that bridges that is discipline. That's it. You know, like, think about it. If you want to be like a world-class athlete, like, say, like the Olympics were, what? Last year, all those people that were in the Olympics outside of that one dancer from Brazil, I mean even maybe she hasn't, I'm not sure they were very disciplined. You know they. They chose their craft or their, their sport or their art over everything and they did whatever it took to get there. They were disciplined, they were regimented, right, and in some cases it gets you the gold or at least metal. You know what I mean. But even at that point in time, think about it there's what maybe 15,000 Olympians or something like that, out of a world that has 5 to 6 billion people, that's like, was it one hundredth of 1%? Are the people in the Olympics. That's it. And the thing that is different between you and them is their discipline. That's it. You know. You think about like.
Speaker 1:We'll talk about athletes like Kobe Bryant, you know, he was disciplined Like. He was methodically though like disciplined, like he was working like a maniac at like two o'clock in the morning he's going to the gym, you know. You look at people like Steve Jobs. That guy works 12 hours a day, seven days a week. Elon Musk, that guy, you know, when he was starting Tesla, he was actually sleeping at the factory, sleeping at the factory Because he had that kind of discipline.
Speaker 1:You know, discipline is one of those things where it's really hard to do, but once you master it, your life is mastered. It just is. You know what I mean. And here's so, as we're talking about this, I gotta get something to drink now because I'm talking a lot.
Speaker 1:So when we're talking about discipline, one thing I think that is a misconception about discipline is that it's very rigid. It can only be this one thing right. It's only A or B. Discipline is adaptable, right, and there's going to be some case where you got to adapt your discipline. Right. You got to do things that are working for you and not doing things that are working against you, right, and when you you're disciplined, you find that out very quickly if something is or is not working for you, so your discipline can be adaptable to you know, to the circumstances that you're currently in. Remember that. You know what I mean.
Speaker 1:And here's the other thing too. I think that is a massive, massive misconception about discipline. A lot of people think that discipline is oh my gosh, you're disciplined, oh, you're not fun, or you're not spontaneous, because it has to be this way. That's actually not true. When you're disciplined here's the thing it actually gives you space to do more. I'll say that again. It creates or gives you space to do more. So, as we're thinking about that right, we're like well, you, well, you just said you know you have to be rigid. What I'm saying to you is is, in the beginning, yes, because you have to adapt to that, right. But then, once you find something that's working for you, then you adapt to more, you start to do more and you start to not waste your time because you're disciplined, and then you get things done at a faster rate. It gives you more free time to do other things. That's the great part about discipline.
Speaker 1:And here's the other thing that I will say that stops a lot of people from being disciplined Is they think that in the very beginning, their discipline has to be perfect. It has to be only this way. And if it's not this way, then they're going to fail and everything's going to be over and their life is done. That's not true. Just like we were saying earlier, discipline is not about rigidity. It's not true. Just like we were saying earlier, discipline is not about rigidity. It's adaptable. You got to adapt to the situation and circumstances that you're in and your discipline will carry you through that. You have to understand that. Don't look at discipline as your enemy. Look at it as somebody, as a partnership that you're working with. That's going to help you to get to where you need to get, to Look at it that way, you know. And here's the thing, when we're talking about discipline, right, I always say this when you want to start building discipline, you have to build. I guess you could call micro-disciplines or mini-disciplines. I guess, um, like, okay, like, I'll give you an example Like every day, like for me, I get up at four o'clock in the morning.
Speaker 1:That's what I do. I meditate, I journal, I really I do visualization to start my day. That's my discipline, right. And then you know, depending on the day, I might podcast the first hour or two of my day, because that's usually one of my most creative, the first hour or two of my day, because that's usually one of my most creative.
Speaker 1:And building just those little like waking up early, getting more things done before, like nine o'clock, before a lot of people are even up, is one of the greatest things or greatest gifts you could give yourself. Right, when you get everything done early and I could just speak from just personal experience. When you get done early on and I could just speak from just personal experience. When you get done early on things right, you get up early. It gives yourself that hour or two, you know, before anyone wants us up, and you get a majority. You get that 80% done before, like 8, 9, 10 o'clock. I'm telling you, a whole new world, a whole new world opens up to you, a whole new world.
Speaker 1:And what starts to happen is is because now you start to enjoy it guess what? You become more disciplined and you start to get more stuff done. And because you're getting more stuff done, you become more disciplined. It's crazy how these things come together right, disciplined. It's crazy how these things come together right Now. Okay, and I'm going to say this too A lot of people think, like when you're disciplined, you're like, oh, I got to just do it like this and I got to be super intense. It's like, no, discipline has nothing to do with intensity, discipline has everything to do with consistency. I'll say that again discipline has nothing to do with your intensity. It has everything to do with your consistency. Right, so you got to focus on being sustainable Because, again, we're starting this year off to change your life. Right, that's what we're doing this for, that's what you're doing this.
Speaker 1:You're listening to this podcast, either in your car or in the gym, or at work, or wherever you're at, on the toilet, wherever you're at. You're listening to this to be consistent in your life, to make a difference in your life, because 2025 has to be the year that you change. Right, you drew it on the line. You drew a line, said no more, right? Well, here's the thing. The thing that's going to get you over, that, that's going to propel you forward, is consistency in your discipline. If you're consistent in your discipline, your life will change. I promise you. I absolutely promise you.
Speaker 1:Okay, now here's the other thing about consistency and about discipline. There's another word that has to come with this, and that word is accountability Right. You can have the best plan in the world, you can say I'm going to be the most consistent person in the world, but if you're not accountable to it, discipline doesn't matter. It doesn't matter, it doesn't matter. Now, as we're talking about this, there's a myriad of things you can do. You can have an accountability partner. There's, there's online groups and forums that does this kind of stuff. Right, you could. You could email me. I'll keep you accountable, you can.
Speaker 1:You know, there's a lot of tools, like one of the tools that I use to help me accountable and to make me regimented and consistent Is I just use timers, right? Let's say, for example, I got a project I want to do or whatever. Right, let's say, for example, I got a project I want to do or whatever. I have this timer I got from oh god, I think it was amazon where it's like it has it's like 20 minutes on, you can take five minute breaks, another 20 minutes on, so you do like six rounds of that, right? Uh, the potombo timer, which is like a tomato timer, essentially, I think what the word derives from. But anyways, which is like a tomato timer, essentially, I think, is what the word derives from. But anyways that, right there, that one tool literally changed my life. And the other thing, too. We live in this world of AI.
Speaker 1:You start typing stuff in the chat GPT Easy for me to say. You start typing this stuff in the chat GPT Easy for me to say you start typing this stuff in the chat GPT I'm telling you that's another great tool to help you stay consistent and disciplined. So, as we're talking about this, there's now another side of discipline, and this is the emotional side. Sorry, I had to get a drink there. We get so afraid of actually not failure, but actually of success. You want to know why that is because the fact that, with discipline and being consistent and being accountable, success is right around the corner. It's just success is right around the corner. It's right around the corner for you, right?
Speaker 1:Then, once you start to understand that all it took was these actions to get to whatever it is that you want, you get really angry and frustrated with yourself. Once that happens, right, once you start going to the gym all the time, and then once you start eating, right, then all of a sudden your weight starts to go down. You're like God, why did I do this sooner? Why did I do this in 2022 or 2023 or last year? None of that matters. All that matters now is that you're doing it now. So stop being afraid of failing or succeeding right. Accept it now. Accept success as yours and it's going to come through being accountable, being consistent and being disciplined. Accept it right now, because those three things are what's going to take you to wherever it is that you want to go in 2025. I promise you that Right Now.
Speaker 1:Here's the other thing, too, about discipline. People think like when you're disciplined, you're depriving yourself. No, you're designing yourself, because discipline isn't about deprivation, it's it's. It's about designing the life that you want and being consistent and accountable in that life that you want. Because here's the thing I'm going to tell you One of the biggest things that you'll see almost right away is not only your performance and what it is that you do, but your relationships.
Speaker 1:When you start to do this, improve. People start taking notice like wait a minute, hold on a second. You're doing better. Oh hey, I see that you look lost. You look like you lost a little bit of weight or man, you got that project done early, or you know, they call you maybe like at six o'clock in the morning and you're like, oh, I already got this and this done, or I'm just leaving the gym. Like what, what are you talking about? You should you should be you wouldn't even be up by now. It's like eight o'clock, you're up and doing stuff already. Yeah, people take notice of that.
Speaker 1:You know, like, for me, when I started doing this, my relationships changed, but the biggest thing that changed in my life was, you could say, my spirituality changed a lot through the visualization and meditation, but the biggest thing that changed was my finances, the amount of money I started making. Just by doing these things, I literally probably increased my income by 30-40%. I'm not even kidding you when I say that Just by doing this, something so simple, not easy, simple there's a difference, right. But I'm telling you, doing this will have literally ripple effects in your life for the rest of your life if you can stay consistent with this right. Because here's the thing that I think a lot of people in the beginning don't understand about discipline.
Speaker 1:Discipline does two things it gives you mental clarity and and it makes you emotionally resilient. You want to know why, when you are clear on what it is that you want and how you're going to get there and you're regimented in that right and you're disciplined in that your emotional intelligence increases because you understand that the world really is based on how you react and the actions that you take is based on how you react and the actions that you take. That's it. I mean we could put, you know, tia in there thoughts, intentions and actions, but guess what? That's also discipline. You got to be disciplined on your thoughts and your intentions and your actions. Well, guess what? You got to be disciplined in your clarity and your emotional intelligence, or you can say, your emotional resilience. You got to be regimented in both of those.
Speaker 1:Again, what I'm telling you right now this is literally I'm telling you you do this, it'll change your life. You know, as we're talking about this, I can hear it right now. Well, that sounds really hard, or I don't know if I could do that. Stop saying that right now. Stop it. You can do this. There are tens of thousands, if not millions, of people that do this on a daily basis. They are no different than you. The only difference is that they made a decision and they stuck with it. You can do the same. You can do the same. You have to understand. You can't just give up. That's not a part about discipline. Discipline is not giving up. That's part of that emotional resilience that we're talking about.
Speaker 1:Discipline is about moving forward, doing the best you can and staying consistent. Doing the best you can and staying consistent that's what it is. Because here's the thing I always look at discipline as this. Discipline is that bridge between where you are and where you want to be. In order to get to where you want to be, you got to drive over that bridge of discipline. This is what it comes down to. This is what it is. It's just what it is. And the fact of the matter is there's, again, millions and millions of people that drive over that bridge every single day, and you could be one of those people as well. Because, again, in closing this, I just want to tell you you can do this, you can. Discipline is very simple, but it's very hard to do. I'll say that again, but it's very hard to do. I'll say that again Discipline itself is very simple, but it's very hard to do. So today, like I said, it's the second. Do not stop. Build your discipline, build it, stay consistent with what it is that you want to do.
